XML Schema Definitions, or XSD's as I refer to them, are a way to validate XML.  XSD's replace the old Document Type Declaration(DTD's) that were once used to validate XML (Much to the dislike of those who don't love Microsoft).  XSD's are more powerful, and are easer to create, parse, and understand(at least in my opinion).
